The Incendiaries

3.23 AVERAGE

No wasted words in this fairly short work. Suspenseful and razor-sharp. Some gorgeous descriptions. Much food for thought in today’s political and social climate, with the line that separates church and state blurring and violence in the name of righteousness on the rise.

Read for the 2019 Popsugar Challenge prompt “book that takes place on a college or university campus.”

This book is dark, odd, & beautifully written. Super intriguing concept. I do wish that I'd gotten to know John Leal more as a character and perhaps gotten more information near the end. But this is excellent fiction. Really well done.

Kwon had some really insightful things to say about religious faith, having it and losing it, and then having relationships with people who are religious. She had several really beautiful turns-of-phrase that I had to stop reading to savor for a moment before carrying on. Very good book, even as I at times got tired of both of the main characters.

Lots of promise, but didn't quite come together.

Uh. 2 stars I guess? I really dont know what to think. It seems disjointed & confused. It's a short book, but the issues would have been worse, I think, if it were longer.
It's not bad, but for me... it's not good. Ugh. I feel bad about leaving a bad review but don't feel comfortable giving it 3 stars.

Pretentious writing but interesting premise.

We never fully know the ones we love. And in our grief, we can also be blinded. This was an impressive debut. I look forward to seeing what Kwon comes up with next.
