Currently the lowest rated book on my Goodreads TBR.
I tried to like this book because it seemed like it was in my wheelhouse. There were some very engaging parts but, for the most part, I found the book rather confusing. In the end, I can only give it two stars. But, that’s just me. Like Anne Bogel always reminds us, “Not every book is for every person, and that’s OK.“

I liked it. The prose definitely *was* overly flowery at times, but R.O. Kwan is a great writer and should be allowed to show off. I do wish it were longer. The pacing came as a surprise; I was expecting the climax to be closer to the middle of the book than the end. I think that's okay, because there is a lot of tension that keeps you reading, and that's what really sells the book for me.

This book felt like a Woody Allen movie to me in the beginning - a whole lot of talk with no story. The prose was alright, but was too abstract and I wasn't really clear for a long while what the split chapters between the characters was about as each one wasn't strongly different. I switched to the audiobook about halfway through, which was maybe better to listen to the rambling, and at the end there was a story, but it wasn't one that really interested me.
“I often thought about what John Leal liked saying, that if we could believe all people existed in their minds as much as we did in our own, the rest followed. To love, he said, is but to imagine well. I pulled out this thought; I held it up, in private, turning it in the light as though I’d find in its prism gleam the Phoebe I could still become.”
