Well written and quite enthralling but at times prioritises the prose over the book.

It’s always hard for me to talk about art that places losing one’s faith at its center because it hits so profoundly close to home for me. The longing for meaning, the loneliness, the angst. I don’t want to get too personal here. I just want to say that I felt very seen by Kwon’s novel. I don’t know if she has had her own crisis of faith and walked away, but I’d be willing to bet she has based on how intensely accurate this felt to my own experience of leaving faith and having friends and loved ones still exist within cult spaces.
Although I hate to post negative reviews I must say that The Incendiaries by R.O. Kwon is sadly not for me.
It's a character driven literary novel yet I just could not bring myself to care about the characters, and with very little plot the book didn't really have much to reel me in. I repeatedly found myself checking how many pages were left as I wanted it to be over.
It also is lacking in quotation marks, and while I know a lot of people enjoy that, it makes it difficult for me to follow what's going on. So much so that I have to read passages a second time to ensure I'm following it correctly.
A lot of people absolutely adored this book and while it may not have been to my liking, don't let my opinion stop you from picking up a copy if the synopsis appeals to you!
Thank you so much to Virago for sending me a free copy to review.
