I liked the premise and the writing but the cult part came very late into the story and it should have been more fleshed out imo

this book was very hyped up, and after reading the blurb, i was very excited to read this! a coming of age story, and it includes a cult with ties to north korea??!!! i'll be frank – save your time and don't read this book (i lowkey wish i had). so much time was spent in developing the relationship between the two main characters, will and phoebe, but i found that to be a waste of words and found myself unattached to their relationship. the subplot to do with the cult was messy in my opinion, and i really wish that there was more on that part of the story. i was also really disappointed by the cult's "tie" with north korea, and saw that as false advertising on the blurb's part. all in all, the book was okay at best, which is a shame as i was so happy when i picked this book up due to the great reviews i got from others

Some gorgeous prose and super clear characters but not my type of book- very introspective and with minimal plot.

Although this book has an interesting premise, I found it filled with vague religious speeches that made no sense (maybe that was the point but they annoyed me), a very problematic and unlikable male protagonist (again, maybe the point but I really do not want to waste my time on these characters) and an unsatisfactory ending. I liked only Phoebe, but she was characterized almost as in a John green novel - not a real person but an idea.
