It was a struggle to finish it. The characters lack depth and their love and connection is hard to buy into. The plot is slow and at times confusing and, since everything is a little 2D, even when the plots climax happens I found myself apathetic and disconnected from the story.

Schwierig. Der Roman ist literarisch wertvoll, keine Frage. Jeder Satz wurde bis aufs letzte i-Tüpfelchen entrümpelt, so dass jedes Wort wichtig erscheint und mit viel Konzentration gelesen werden muss, um nichts zu verpassen, wenn die Gedanken mal 3 Sätze lang zur Einkaufsliste schweifen. Besonders interessant fand ich die Seitenblicke, die auf Sexismus geworfen werden, das Thema ernst nehmen, aber angenehm beiläufig behandeln. Eigentlich geht es ja darum, dass Phoebe in einen Kult hineingerät und ihr Freund Will versucht, damit umzugehen. Daher habe ich von dem Buch auch wesentlich mehr Einblicke in diese Richtung erwartet, aber kaum bekommen. Mein größtes Problem stellt die kühle Sachlichkeit dar, mit der erzählt wird. Es sind Extreme, die die Charaktere hier durchleben und trotzdem habe ich weder die Verzweiflung noch die Trauer, Wut oder Ratlosigkeit spüren können. Und so habe ich mich schlussendlich den Großteil der Handlung gelangweilt.

This slim debut novel commands your full attention from the first page to the last. The shifting timelines and perspectives can leave you feeling off-kilter as a reader at times. But, I think that was part of the point -- the characters all come from different perspectives and are processing their own experiences in their own ways. The writing made this feel like a series of memories being recorded after the bombings occurred, especially in the chapters told from Will's perspective as he tried to discern what happened, determine Phoebe's role (or not), and reexamined events leading up to the present. Despite being a dense, thought-provoking novel that tackles many big themes (religion, relationships, love, and terrorism), I still found it to be accessible and believe this is one I will continue to think about for some time.
