This was a weird one. Some stories I found really engaging, other...not so much.

It was hard to get through some of the racist and obtuse references but I expected that. It's a good read if you are looking for a snapshot of what those in the past were fearful of.

This was not spooky or weird at all...so "ooh something is happening and then it stopped *shrugs*" not what I was expecting or wanting...also found out he wasn't a good person so stopped reading.

Plot or Character Driven: Plot

Short stories are always so bitter sweet. I did like these a lot, it is easy to see how Lovecraft inspired many current day horror writers.

The OG of Cosmic Horror himself, this is the first collection of Lovecraft's work, and it is solid gold hit after solid gold.

Unfortunately, about halfway through every story, you'll come to a realization that the villain is just a metaphor for a group Howard was afraid of, and it really detracts.

That said, my timbers were still noticeably shivered after completion, so we'll split the difference and say 3.5/5

It's worth reading, but you need to concentrate to get through it

Heard on audiobook. The Call of Cthulhu and The Hound were good, but I had to give up after that as it couldn’t hold my interest.

Read the first two stories and a few pages of the third.

Thank you Nook for bringing me back to the Masters. This tale is well written and launched an Empire. While some of the dialog is dated it is sure to touch a nerve on the spine of every reader. A must read for any horror junkie.
