DID NOT FINISH: 67%

A quite dense short story collection with heavier novellas at the end. Unsure if I feel it is the right time to give those last two novellas my attention. Enjoyed the first two thirds of the collection!

My first time reading any of Lovecraft's work, and I wasn't really impressed. Even beyond the blatant xenophobia that pervades his work, I simply didn't find the horrors he described quite that horrifying. I don't think time treated the wok kindly (once more, even beyond the BLATANT and PERVASIVE xenophobia)--the once titillating and unimaginable horrors are honestly well within my understanding.

So this is my official entry into the Cthulhu mythos. Having only read a couple of his short stories before, I was really excited to start diving deep, especially starting from Dagon. 18 short stories from his bibliography which gave me a strong grasp on Lovecraft’s prose, atmosphere and general themes that he’s trying to convey in this. That being said, some stories were a lot more entertaining imo than others, my favorites being The Whisperer in Darkness and The Shadow over Innsmouth above the others but all of the entries were uniquely bizzare and unsettling in their own way. Love how makes humans very insignificant against these celestial beings and shows how much our mind protects us and harms us once we cross a threshold of awareness. There’s def complaints and certain things I really don’t want to talk about concerning Lovecraft that reflects in his works which is actually hilarious because he’s not at all subtle but I was here for the content of the stories and I was very satisfied with what I came out with.

My introduction to Lovecrafts works. This book might come off boring to some folks but personally I loved it.
