Found it fascinating & worthwhile, though I grew tired of the language and unrelenting tone at points. As the implicit narrative becomes more apparent, though, it does start to blossom. Can’t think I’ve read another appendix that gave me so much satisfaction :)

I don't think I was smart enough to read this book but damn did I leave this book having learn a bunch of facts and the way Elsby tied it to all the fucked up shit the main character was doing brought a dark satirical element to it.

A philosophy professor gets defunded but she has experiments to run, and that's not going to stop her. Dark academia but make it horror - a first of its kind!!

Charlene Elsby, I'll read your grocery list.

Alright…. What do I say… for such a short book I needed a long time to process this one. I reached out for an ARC of this one because I saw someone review it and talk about how dark and gross it was. I was like eh it’ll be fine… but… this book is twisty and dark and gross. Like so gross. I adored that it was written like a research paper. It was an interesting format because like all of the torture is for the sake of some deluded research goal of the main character.
I think it made it intriguing on a psychological level to see how the main character justifies all of the things she’s doing. At first it’s to prove some kind of point. However, most of her experiments have some personal revenge/vendetta motive. I will say with each case study the experiments get darker and more intense. Once we get towards the end of the book they definitely become more personal and therefore more terrible.
I only gave the book four stars because the last few chapters lost me. I mean you could see the main character was devolving into her insanity, but like I’m still not sure what actually happened at the end of the book. However, it isn’t a book I will forget anytime soon. If you read this one I would recommend a light fluffy read to immediately follow it… because oh my god! I honestly think this might be one of the darkest things I have read to date.
