Two Nights

Kathy Reichs

3.38 AVERAGE

Sunday Night is damaged but not totally broken. Former military and former cop and survivor of a horrific childhood Sunnie knows about nightmares. Now she is being asked to find a young woman whose plight she can relate to. But will the memories destroy her before she can save the girl?
Two Nights by Kathy Reichs is a well written intriguing tale of pain, survival and facing your deepest fears. In events that could’ve been ripped straight from the headlines this story brings you darkness and light and all the shades of gray in between. This is an incredible story that will keep you thinking long past the last page.

A slight change from the author's typical main character of Temperance Brennan. Sunday Night is the main character in this novel. Sunnie's a little hard to get to know initially, a tough, off the grid, ex cop that has been hired to find a woman's granddaughter. As the book progresses, we get to know more about Sunnie's background and things make a lot more sense. I'm definitely intrigued by her background, and I hope there's more novels featuring her. Two Nights is action packed, intense, relevant to today, and with a focus on police investigation. Overall, the writing style is still the Kathy Reichs we know and love, just with another strong, smart female main character. I did miss the forensic anthropology aspect of the investigation though. I'm intrigued to see what Kathy Reichs will write next.

Thanks to NetGalley, Kathy Reichs, and Random House for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Kathy Reichs is one of my favorite authors; her Temperance Brennan novels are must reads for me. This is not a Brennan novel, but it's a solid first book set in a different place with a different cast of characters.

The thing is -- I'm not sure why this ISN'T a Brennan novel. The motivations of the main character are different, obviously, but this could have easily been written into the "Bones" universe. That being said, if Reichs builds a new world around Sunday Night as well as she did Tempe Brennan, I'll be reading these novels for years, picking them up as soon as they come out. For now -- Two Nights was a solid foundation upon which to build a new series, but as a standalone (or if judged as a debut from a new author would be), it didn't quite grab me the way I was hoping for.

My Rating System:
5 Stars = great book, would enthusiastically recommend
4 Stars = good book, would recommend
3 Stars = so-so rating, might recommend
2 Stars = finished, but would not recommend
1 Stars = bailed

I have been a fan of the authors Temp Brennan series and was excited to see what this book would bring. This is a stand-alone story which introduces us to the character of Sunday Night. Sunnie has issues of her own, but she finds herself having to deal with those as she is drawn into the search for a missing girl.

Sunnie is a great character as she has so many flaws, but that endeared her to me even more. I look forward to reading more about her in the future.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy.

A bit bland. Reichs shines when there is forensic anthropology, so this one falls a bit flat. She struggles to write young characters believably and is even worse at writing black characters. The subplot was more interesting than the main plot.

I enjoyed this. Sunday Night is a fun character and I love Kathy Reichs's style. I completely understand her wanting to try out a different character but I missed the science and the learning that I always get from her Temperance Brennan books.

This is an engaging book about an investigator with the appealing name of Sunday Night. While I prefer Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan series, this book certainly kept me turning the pages. Thanks to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine Bantam and NetGally for the ARC.

DNF at 60%, didn't hold my attention. No rating.
slow-paced

I got this from Random House UK via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was hoping for something a bit different from Kathy's new series. And in places, I got it, but other than not cutting up bodies, Sunny and Tempe came across too similar to me. I'm also enjoying her relatively terse writing style less than I used to, but the plot was still good enough to keep me involved.
