I seem to be reading a few books with prickly female lead characters lately. This one is a real page turner with a few twists and turns along the way. I've always enjoyed Kathy Reichs' books and will read the next one if she decides to turn it into a series.
Sunday Night is an ex-cop and ex-military. One day, her friend Beau asks her to go see the wealthy Opaline Drucker. Opaline wants Sunday to investigate the death of her daughter and grandson, and find her missing granddaughter. They were killed in a bombing outside a Jewish school, and her granddaughter’s body was never found. Opaline is certain that her granddaughter is still alive because someone tried to access her bank account recently. Sunday starts her search in Chicago. Along with her brother, she is led on a hunt across the U.S., from California to D.C.
Sunday Night is a very unlikeable character. She narrates the story, and is very blunt. Though sometimes unlikeable characters can be effective, Sunday was too negative and flat.
The story moved slowly. There were also confusing chapters about a girl who was locked away in a house. It takes a long time to discover what those parts are about, and the outcome was disappointing.
Sunday also did a lot of strange things throughout her investigation, that made the story move slowly. She didn’t explain any of her plans. She would repeatedly do things, which got tiring after a while. For example, she always got a second hotel room, and never stayed where she was supposed to. She didn’t explain the purpose of this and it got tedious after the first few times. Fewer repetitive details like this would have made the story move faster and more enjoyable.
I really enjoy Kathy Reich’s other books about Temperance Brennan. There was even a reference to Bones in this story. I was excited to read this one too, but it was disappointing. It had too many details and not enough explanation.

I've seen some reviews from my Goodreads friends that gave this book a 3 out of 5 stars. I honestly would give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
I love Kathy's books. Her Temperance Brennan series got me started in reading crime fiction and mysteries. (I also love her Virals series). This book was a bit different from her other books. It's a stand alone but I wouldn't mind if it became a series too.
In this book we meet a different character, Sunday Night, or Sunnie as she's called by those that know her. As this book starts, Sunnie is on her boat when she gets a visit from Beau, a friend of hers asking her to visit with a woman about her missing granddaughter. One thing leads to another and Sunnie ends up being hired by this woman to try to find her missing granddaughter. Sunnie discovers that the girl was kidnapped by a terrorist group and is determined to save her.
Kathy has a way of writing a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and not wanting to get out of your chair (or bed) to go do everyday things, like going to work. Haha.
If Kathy decides to make this a series, I'm all for it but I do hope to see more Temperance Brennan novels in the future.
If any of you are looking for a great Summer read I would suggest this one. It comes out in the US on July 11th, 2017.
Thank you to NetGalley, Kathy Reichs, and the publisher for a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
This is an engaging book about an investigator with the appealing name of Sunday Night. While I prefer Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan series, this book certainly kept me turning the pages. Thanks to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine Bantam and NetGally for the ARC.
I have loved the authors Temperance Brennan books for years (long before there was a TV show) so I was beyond excited when I learned she had a new book released. I couldn't wait to get my hands on this. Sunday Night (yes that is her name) is such a badass. She is wonderfully flawed, with a interesting back story & she doesn't take shit from anybody. It was interesting to see a different side of the investigation with this book. In the Temperance books we get a lot of science & medical discoveries that help solve the crime. This book was strictly good investigate skills and lots of leg work. While this book is listed as a stand alone I could easily see this as the start to a new series or Sunday, at the least, making appearances in the Temperance books. I hope this isn't the last we see of Sunday & August Night (hence the title Two Nights) because I really liked them & would love to see what other kind of trouble they get into/ out of.
I have read all of Reichs Temperence Brennan books and so I was super excited to read this new book which is a totally different path for Reichs... I was not dissapointed!
Sunday Night, or Sunnie as she is known, has a hard past as ex-military and ex-police, now living a recluse life after she lost an eye in an accident.
However Sunnie is called on to use her skils and past personal history as a PI to find a missing girl and who murdered the girls mother and brother.
Sunny is aided on the way by August another interesting character - slowly throughout the book pieces of their history, and especially how Sunny has been shaped as a person, are revealed.
The plot is an interesting twist on things which are currently world concerns and events are fast paced.
The only reason this loses a star for me is occasionally the writing style makes it harder and less smooth to read.
Overall a great introduction to a new direction for Recih and one I hope has some more books to come!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in return for an honest review.

This is actually the first book by Kathy Reichs that I've ever read, and I found it to be an enjoyable read, though one that made my skin crawl from time to time.
Sunday Night is the kind of character I like to read about in these types of novels. She is flawed, and tough, and even though she does briefly allow her trauma to influence her situations she steps up when its needed.
Her brother Gus is an intriguing character because he seems to have gone the opposite of her in reaction to past experiences
The plot of this book is a slow burn I can truly appreciate as not everything was revealed at once but it left me captivated long enough to keep on reading. The motivation of the bombers made my skin crawl, because it felt all too real in the world we live in today, with all that's been happening in the world.
Kathy Reichs builds a world full of danger, but justice, with wounds left behind and it was quite a nice read.

I thank William Heinemann (Penguin Random House, UK) via NetGalley for a proof copy of this book.
Sunday 'Sunnie' Night is a reclusive, scarred (physically and mentally) ex-cop, ex-military living on Goat Island and, in a move away from the forensic/FBI Tempe Brennan Series Kathy Reichs is well known for, we are brought into the world of private investigation.
Twelve months earlier in the aftermath of a bombing in Chicago a young girl, Stella, goes missing. Her mother and brother have been killed in the bombing. Her grandmother asks Sunnie to find Stella, if she is alive, and bring 'justice' to the bombers who she believes have Stella. Sunnie is smart but reckless and some of the reasons for this, and why this case has brought her out of her reclusive life, are dealt with in the book.
This is a 'stand-alone' which may not be liked by those who enjoy the Brennan series but, once I got into the book, I enjoyed it. It has certainly left the door open to become a series and, provided Sunnies 'demons' aren't overdone, could well become a favourite with some. It's a good, enjoyable read.

Having long loved the TV series "Bones", I was thrilled to read one of the books by the author behind that series. This book didn't disappoint me. This is a new detective, but one I really liked. The puns are so funny, and I hope this is the start of a new series. This book stands alone, and I really liked it! Sunnie is pretty cool.
