This book is a mildly entertaining account of a British man's year living in France. There are some entertaining observations about the French way of life and cultural differences between France and Britain. Unfortunately however, the main character seems to have only sex on the brain. About 50% of the book is dedicated to sexulaised descriptions of the women he meets, and detailed accounts of how they did or didn't want to have sex with him. It also rathers plays on flat clichés with out adding much depth. Some entertaining moments, but overall disappointing.
Minor: Infidelity
Funny stuff! If you speak a little French, or have spent a little time in Paris, you can totally relate to parts of this book. Kind of like a Bill Bryson who sleeps around a lot more....
The protagonist leads a fun life while he is doing contract work for a business in France. He has interesting adventures as he learns a new way of life as a brand new Parisian. Very fun!
Stephen Clarke definitely has a good sense of ridiculousness, and is great at poking fun at the French, as well as making humiliations of a foreigner incredibly amusing. It makes some parts of this book laugh-out-loud. However, he doesn't really know when to stop. Thus, the rest of the book was snarky and the main character was extremely annoying. Although I got some laughs out of it, I was glad when the year was over.
This is seriously the funniest book I've ever read and that's saying something from me because books don't make me laugh out loud. How many times I broke out in chuckles while on the tube, I cannot remember. It's just hilarious.
Read for the armchair traveller's challenge at RRRC - France add-on for Option #2.
