This was a decent standalone after reading a series. It is a bit dark but it was a fun read. The characters started out a bit younger when they met each other but it really took off once they were older (she was 18). The MMC was dark and broody and the FMC was conning and I feel they both were a bit morally gray which was fun. The spice did take off pretty quickly and it was a lot of spice. 3.75/5 stars for me!

Was this a groundbreaking romantasy book? No. Was it entertaining enough? Yes.
It IS nice that this is a one off book, no massive series or universe you have to commit too. Which, in turn, means it is fairly fast paced and there is less time to really flesh out all aspects of the characters. I would give it moderate to mild 🌶️ even if there was a lot of biting for a fae book.

This book is a well-written story with lyrical prose and a haunting atmosphere.
The emotional depth and raw vulnerability of the characters are compelling, and the slow unraveling of past wounds adds a somber weight to the narrative.
While the angst is palpable and the love story intense, the pacing felt uneven at times, and certain plot points left me wanting more clarity.
It’s a novel that leans heavily into emotion and trauma, which may not be for everyone, but fans of deeply poetic and melancholy romance will find plenty to appreciate.

I love the idea of a standalone Fantasy/Romance because so many series at once just feels like a lot. Having a simple and to the point book fills the need for the Romantasy high without the 5+ book load. However, I feel like there were a couple things that got caught in each others crosshairs and made the plot muddled. Going back over a page or two isn't my most favorite activity while reading.
This book would shine as a 5 star read if it was made into a Duet style or if it was simply just a couple hundred pages longer. At the same time, the plot itself felt rushed into just being able to say it was done; which ultimately led to confusion. The plot twist was so close to being perfect but it got lost in the overshadow of the plot lines intersecting and twisting up. I'm obsessed with Beauty and the Beast and this felt like that mixed with Fae. It was a truly beautiful and fun read, just need some more care towards the end and just more time to draw out the plot to fully finished places respectively.
