I have mixed feelings about this book. It’s not what I imagined when I first went into it, I thought it would be his whole life, and it’s just early years, the flashbacks threw me off and lost me in the book a bit too and then I would find myself in and out of the book and that’s why it took me longer than usual to finish

I had heard great things about this book and I was pleasantly surprised that it was as good as people have said. I was originally under the impression that this was going to be a narrative-based nonfiction about Caesar, but instead its a historically founded partially fictional novel. Caesar, Aurelia, Cornelia, Labienus, Marius, and others make up the bulk of this novel as a wonderful cast and crew. The book follows Caesar and allies from childhood to his first trial against the corrupt senator, Dolabella. I was fascinated by the book's ability to give an insight into a less covered part of Caesar's life whilst also remaining engaging and smooth throughout the story. I really enjoyed this book, though it could drag at some points in the story. Either way, this was a wonderful read that truly satisfied my curiosity. I am happy to see that the author wrote this as the first book in a trilogy about Caesar--though the other two have not been translated and published in English at this point. I am truly hoping that the English success of this story will allow for the other two to be translated and published. I look forward to continuing the story of Posteguillo's Caesar.

“Recuérdalo siempre, hijo mío: Roma eres tú.”
When no Roman citizen is willing to prosecute the corrupt Senator Dolabella, Julius Caesar steps in. The Jury has been bribed and Dolabella's lawyer has inside information, but Caesar is determined to do what he feels is right and defend Rome. Spanning from his childhood to the trial where he is a young twenty-three years old, we follow Julius as he becomes the man we all know from the history books.
I did read the translated version of this, but I almost wish I had read the original. I always wonder if I am missing a little something with translations. With that said, this was kind of okay...but not my favorite. While this was an interesting and well researched take on the life of a young Caesar, I also found it very long and the time jumps to be slightly jarring. If ancient history is your thing, you might enjoy this.

I found this fascinating. I previously had zero knowledge of the early life of Julius Caesar and his rise to power, but this has shed some light on how that came to be. I find myself thinking about this book occasionally, and hoping for a part 2.
