Die Pest

‘Indeed, as he heard the cries of delight rising from the city, Reiux remembered that this delight was always threatened. For knew what this Joyous crowd did not-that the plague bacillus never dies or disappears, that it can lie dormant for decades in furniture and linens, that it waits patiently in rooms, in basements, in trunks, among handkerchiefs and paperwork, and that perhaps the day would come when, for the sorrow and education of men, the plague would revive its rats and dispatch them to die in a happy city.’

profundo, realista, te hace sentir el miedo y misterio en primera persona. una obra maestra en su máximo esplendor.

A bit grim

One of my favorite books, Camus's The Plague proves its narrator's point that in times of pestilence there is more to admire in humanity than to despise. An ever-relevant tale of decency triumphing over catastrophe.

4.5/5

A beautifully written story that resonates strangely close to home as Cambert seems to inadvertently stir up memories of the covid lockdown. The book is rife with characters whom I found my appreciation for creeping up out of nowhere as each of the main cast becomes more likeable and fascinating as the plot progresses.
