book club choice this fall

Cute. Brought up some interesting "tween" issues, but everything was very pat/simplistic (including the writing) - even given the intended audience, I thought.

It's really good and has real middle school experiences that some people might be able to relate to.

I read this book thinking it would be a cute one to have my daughter read too since we both love reading. While my daughter in particular is too young for it, I wouldn’t be comfortable sharing it because of the fat-phobic parts.

I had my guard up from the first chapter when Emma said something along the lines of, I couldn’t do dance because my body wasn’t made for a leotard. Now I could see this being a thing if there were some kind of resolution where she realizes her size should have no impact on what she does or does not do but there wasn’t one.

They also spent a good part of the book making fun of another adult woman because of her size.

All in all I will not be recommending my daughter read it.

The Mother Daughter Book Club could totally be a Disney Original Movie. Misconceptions cleared up? Check. True sisterhood discovered? Check. Louisa May Alcott's house visited? Check. What else could you ask for?

I thought this was a really cute book. I can definitely remember middle school enough to know how horrible it would be to be put into a group with people you don't get along with well at school... especially if they tease you. I thought the characters developed well and were pretty well-rounded. I do think it's lame that each girl sort of corresponded with a girl in Little Women, but what can you do. The mother-daughter relationships were the best part of the book and it was great to watch them develop and grow. Pretty good book.
