What can I say about this book? IT WAS LOOOOONG!!!! I listened to this on CD--26 discs, 32 hours! I think in some ways I would have liked to have read it--it certainly would have been quicker--but with Eliot's language, it was probably better to let someone else! I am really glad that I will get to discuss this one with my book group. Who knows I may even decide I like it more once I understand it!!

PS I just read this comment in someone else's review and I just had to add it to mine!!
"I should clarify that the book deserves four stars; it may even deserve five, but I didn't like it as much as it deserves. I'm considering this a flaw in my reading, not in the book. I'm certainly overwhelmed by it."

Listened via Hoopla. I had missed this book in my school years. I'll have to revisit again later in life as well.

The writing is just beautiful. It doesn't glorify marriage as a goal, though that is the goal of some of the characters. You get it in its flaws. And the inner and outer lives all of the people in the town: great weaving of all the stories.

You are clearly supposed to identify with Dorothea, but I found myself identifying a lot with Lydgate and I don't know what that says about me. I think we all love to despise Casaubon. And we all wanted to smack Fred early on, but he does get his act together. I do kind of wish Dorothea hadn't ended up married in the end- she would have been great as a single woman with her goals. But I get it it.

bellissimo stupendo astonishing uno dei migliori romanzi io abbia mai letto !!!!!!!!!!!!!
