This is a super uncomfortable read and then it just ends. The conflict we start with and the conflict we end with could be two different books entirely, and neither is resolved.

An interesting look at content moderators who review the worst things people put onto the internet, and how becoming desensitised to such content might affect their own sense of morality. The concept was super intriguing but the execution felt very rushed. There were a lot of different topics and themes covered that could have had more time spent on them, and the open ending felt anticlimactic and unfinished, like the author just didn’t know how to end the book.

In an era where shock horror is becoming very mainstream and shows (and books) focused on evil technology/futurology/bizarre or unnerving workplaces are huge hits, it takes a lot to stand out. Unfortunately, this book did not. Maybe it was the disjointed telling, maybe it was the fact that the "horrors" being described are nothing new, and there was no real sense of dread or uneasiness, just unhappiness. I think part of the problem is that Bervoets failed to fit this into a genre, which meant it rode the lines between a bunch of genres, not successfully dipping into any of them.

Very abrupt ending. I definitely think more things could have been elaborated on and more details about the job could have been exposed. It was a gripping story but ultimately let me down.

ps. I wish I could read the book in its original language.

A pretty heavy read. I think it’s a good narrative on how what we see online really affects our behaviour in real life, hence we see how some of the characters change throughout the course of the book. It’s a short read - read it in a hour and a half. I would have liked a bit more exploration on the topic personally - because it’s so short I don’t think it’s as in depth as it could have been, but still a decent read.

i’m not sure why but i thought this was nonfiction. i think this book lacked a general plot or much substance. i’m not really sure what the point of this book is
