Pretty grim and depressing. Like of Kafka had decided to write a post-apocalyptic novel: The characters don't really have any character, they're just trapped in this impossible situation and the plot is just a slow unwinding to the inevitable end.

Une critique du capitalisme et de l'individualisme comme on les aime ☝️ J'aurais peut-être préféré un peu + d'action de la part de ce personnage principal qui se veut en opposition à la direction, mais au fond, est-ce que ça n'aurait pas desservi le propos du livre ? Même avec des idées de pseudo rébellion/opposition, le narrateur se conforme, baisse la tête et suit les plans des autres. Lui qui ne comprend plus le comportement de Maria sur la fin du récit ne réalise pas qu'elle n'est que son propre reflet.

For a book written in the 60s, this felt very relevant and could have easily been written this year.
However I found the novella quite repetitive and didn't give me the unsettling edge that I was hoping for.
