I love magical realism but don’t always love YA. Both elements worked for me isn’t this book. It’s a really strange novel and a sweet love story and it’s about friendship and family and finding yourself and I highly recommend it.

Such a beautiful book! This reminds me of a modern-day fairy-tale with fantastical things happening in the real world. The author explores LGBT issues in a unique way and creates a sweet, enduring love story. I was especially moved by her author's note, and kudos to her for writing from her heart. When the Moon Was Ours is full of beautiful prose and exposition, and while I'm not sure I understood absolutely everything that was going on, it remained a great listen, the two voice actors having done a marvelous job for this recording.

I read this as part of the Read Harder Challenge for 2017 and struggled to get into it. I've always struggled with magic realism but I persisted and by the final third it had me gripped

I didn’t dislike this but also didn’t love it, the overall story was good but was also a little complicated and not always well explained.

✨3.5 stars. I liked this book, it was an enjoyable time. The characters were not my absolute favorites and the trans rep was eh(I mostly wished that the actual trans characters could have talked about how they felt more, rather than the cis character projecting onto them and assuming what they felt) but other than that, it was a pretty good book with really nice, flowery writing and an interesting setting.

I can see why people love this book. I rooted for these characters, and they made me cry. I can appreciate the dreamy misty vibe of the writing, where it's not quite clear where or when we are, and how much magic there is in the world.
But this is not my jam. I found the vagueness frustrating. I had multiple moments of "wait, that was a metaphor right? No, wait, you were being literal," and also, I think, a few of the reverse. Not fun for me.
