This has been on my TBR list for a while. I'm always excited to find a new series. This is book one with 33 more books! The original publication date was in 1989. Wow, tech has evolved so much since then. Pay phones, carrying change for them, calling cards, answering machines, video-taping broadcast news. I giggled when a home theater was described with a 27-inch television. Not sure how important it is to read the books in order, but I think for the next book, I will read one in the series that was published in this century

Great first book in a series. I really enjoyed the crime as well as the solving of the crime. The intelligence of the writing and the crime scene stands out. The dialog is the real winner though. Not sure I'll read the series this year, but will certainly get a start on it.

DID NOT FINISH: 25%

Just didn't like it. The main character was annoying to. The whole book seemed misogynistic. The women in the book were not well written or believable.

3.5 stars really. I was going to ditch this after the first few pages but have a built-in reluctance to not finish books. Glad I didn't. Sandford pulls you in nicely and although his hero is over the top in all sorts of ways the plot rolls along well. The book has much of 'crime noir' about it and the climax, although a little cliched, is excitingly laid out.

I don't like Davenport. Maybe he'll grow on me? I've heard this series is good
