This is what I would call fantasy-lite. It's not a knock on the book, in fact I prefer it, and it was a pretty enjoyable read overall. 3.5 stars

Its a dnf, but for me dnf's count towards filling my reading challenge if I made a solid effort. I just, couldn't get into the overall story, I was really loving the romance part, and the characters, and the worldbuilding. Normally when those things are good I can ignore a plot that doesn't interest me, but not this time, not a objectively bad plot, just not for me

I really liked this one.

Allen and Sarrica's courtship gone wrong was very interesting especially in the first few chapters where they were actually both in court together.

Allen being insulted by Sarrica's rudeness (both intentional and unintentional) was enjoyable to read.

The two's miscommunication throughout 90% of the book was also really funny and well written. Both wanted the same thing (to get married, be in a romantic relationship, but couldn't express it in an effective way so they just kept on missing each other's points)

I liked Sarrica's sadness and devotion to his dead husband Nyle, so I was not a fan of how they essentially made it out to be such that Nyle and Sarrica's relationship was at the brink of falling apart at the end to get him to move on. I feel like there could've been a better way to allow Sarrica closure without having him realize that Nyle was about to divorce him

Other than that, the characters were interesting (Leston and Rene) and their dynamics with Sarrica were fun to read as they felt like brothers bickering.

A little lighter on the court intrigue than I would've liked, but I enjoyed the small amount that was present.

This was less a romance than a political story with a romantic subplot. A grieving widower king comes to respect the expert linguist who was trained to rule at his side, and love follows. The two are apart for quite a bit of the book, yet that doesn't make their relationship less believable. A solid balance of plot and character.
