First read: April 2015

Second read (not including prior audiobook): July 2020

Back to where it all started. I fell in love with Whyborne, Griffin and Christine here during my first read of this fantastic series and I'm reliving all of my favourite moments again. Thankfully, this is a series that improves upon subsequent readings because quarantine life 2020 is boring af and I needed this distraction badly.

Loved this book so much that I immediately devoured the next one and onto the third. Also there is a lot of really hot sex.

This book is all the things - it's an urban-fantasy-horror-mystery-historical-gay-romance. At it's heart it's a romance, though. Specifically, if you wish you had some Sherlock/Watson inspired romance with Lovecraft nods and a little bit of an Elizabeth Peters vibe, here is your book!
When I read romance I'm usually more the romcom type than the erotica type; horror's not my jam; and I didn't click with the characters (too sincere, not enough sass, maybe?), so I don't know that I'll continue with the series, but I'm glad it's out there.

This book has a lot of elements that aren't always favorites of mine, but they all blended together perfectly, to make an awesome story. It's historical, horror, paranormal, and mystery, all with a brilliant love story beneath it all. I always love characters like Percival Whyborne, the ones who feel like they just don't fit in and somehow are unworthy. I hurt for them when they hurt, and I'm happy when they realize they really are worth loving.

The mystery/horror plot was also very well done, keeping me guessing right up til the end, and those monsters were truly horrifying!

Wow, I really enjoyed this one. Way steamier than I expected and I thought Griffin was the perfect guy ever - strong, caring, confident but vulnerable. This book was a great mix of sexiness under all the prim and properness of the times.

A queer smutty historical romance with supernatural elements, a museum setting, a dashing detective, and a strong-willed and independent female character. Well-paced and just the right amount length-wise. An easy 3.5*

DNF @ 5hrs 34mins out of 9 hrs and 15 mins.

I've been trying to finish this for a week but when I realised how utterly bored I was there was no turning back. I was hoping the regency and paranormal aspects would work for me, like The Magpie Lord and the other 2 books in K.J. Charles series did, but it didn't click.

So I'm out and since this is the second fail I had with this author, I think this is the end of the road for me and them.
