Henri Charriere "Drugelis" šiais metais, tikriausiai, buvo knyga, kurią skaičiau ilgiausiai. Blaškiausi tarp įdomios istorijos ir gana blankaus pasakojimo, turint omenyje, koks neįtikėtinas likimas aprašomas.

Siužetas - wow. O kai žinai, kad tai tikra istorija, kiekvienas posūkis, laimėjimas ar pralaimėjimas tai bebūtų, sujaudina ir priverčia klustelt - ar tikrai taip buvo? Ar tai įmanoma?

Įmanoma, pasirodo, dar ir kaip. Bet kas neįmanoma - dokumentacijos sausumas. Tokią istoriją norisi skaityti ir važinėtis "linksmaisiais" emocijų kalnelniais. Gal ir būtų buvę geriau, jei redaktoriaus ranka būtų prisilietusi stipriau arba, jei Drugelis istoriją pasakotų, o kitas ją užrašytų. Neliteratūrinis background'as jaučiasi ir kiša koją. Su tuo ir strigau visas dešimt dienų.

Tie, kurie mėgsta tikras istorijas ir istorija yra svarbiau už stilių - imkit, skaitykit ir tikrai nepasigailėsit. Mūsų šių dienų kasdienybė yra katino ašaros, palyginus su tuo, ką teko išgyventi šios istorijos herojui.

This is an absolutely amazing book and I can't believe it's taken me this long to read it (especially as I saw the Steve McQueen film as a kid). Charriere writes with ease and doesn't try to justify, explain or cover up anything he did during his time in the penal system. Yes he shows remorse and regret for some of his actions but this comes across as more for himself than the reader rather than the actions of a man seeking the approval of society, which this book could of ended up doing. He is utterly candid in how he felt during these times and why events went the way they did (where he can offer such explanations) and how such events guided him further in his future decisions. Not only that he manages to avoid the trap of spending the entire book berating the 'justice' system of the time and is surprisingly acquiescent about his fate. The writing itself is incredibly engaging and descriptive, taking the reader to the heart of the system, including the long long months in solitary confinement. The candid nature of Charriere's writing makes this a surprisingly easy read, despite it's length. I would definitely recommend everyone gives this a go!

Cavale is the first word you will learn. It means escape in French, and that is what Henri does throughout the entire book. I first saw the movie a few years back with Steve McQueen and was blown away by the complexity on what should have been a standard prison film. The book adds about 10 other escapes, both successful and not. And the pain of the penal system at the turn of the last century. World War II happens but they are so far removed from it, in their 3rd world prison, that it impacts the story not at all. Its a dense book, with many many details of prison life, and the type of people who were interred in these places. But I think the movie is good enough. I would't advise reading the book unless you're really obsessed, because he says for himself 75% of it is true, so that means alot could have been cut out and probably should have.
