An incredible tale of grit and survival. Disappointed to realise this version was slightly abridged, but it didn't take away from the intense adventure

I know this is a classic for a reason, but the translated prose is so clunky and the storytelling uneven, I could not bring myself to keep reading.

DNF. I know it’s a true story or whatever but it seems outrageously embellished at times. Why are all these random people helping him in his escape plan for zero reason at all? Just giving him money and supplies and risking their own lives to help a convicted (although potentially innocent) murderer that they don’t know? I really was enjoying the book but at a certain point I’m a little tired of it being a constant stream of fans, male and female, coming to his aid. Henri Charrière thinks very highly of himself. I mean good for him, but it makes the some of the details in the book a bit unbelievable.
I loved the movie and when I realized it was a true story and based off of his book I was excited to read it. I’ll try it again later because I wanted to love it.
