I don't know if all of it was true, but still, it was an amazing book, full of adventure, true friendship and courage. The way he inspired trust and leadership was incredible. He had a way with people, they respected him and everyone tried to make his life as good as it could be given the circumstances. He never lost hope, he never ceased trying to escape, he was a fighter all the way until the end.

The book was a bit slow in places and could have done with a bit of editing, but overall it was compelling.

I really had a hard time reading this book. I tried reading it about three times, but I just never really got into it. Luckily, listening to it as an audiobook saved me here, as it made the reading experience much more enjoyable and creating the illusion that Papillon himself told the story out loud. It was an interesting story, but the writing style was just a big hurdle to enjoy it properly.
