I read this book for the first time as a teenager, some 30-odd years ago, when YA got too boring and I found it on my parents' bookshelf. I re-read it a bunch of times and loved it. The movie with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman wasn't bad, but doesn't really do it justice, like so many movie adaptations of good books.

Incredible book- found it hard to get into at first but soon became obsessed with his story!

The first few pages made me nervous. The author seemed disconnected from the story; using far too many cliches and a conversational voice I am not a fan of reading. Perhaps this is because he had never written anything in life! As the story got moving, however, either the plot was exciting enough to hide the amateur writing or Charriere became more comfortable telling his story and it no longer seemed uncomfortable and forced. A truly amazing..., AMAZING, story and all the more incredible because it is true. Thanks Alyssa for recommending and lending it out to me!

Měla jsem velká očekávání, která se bohužel nenaplnila. Nechápu, proč je tahle kniha tak oblíbená.

It’s an incredible story but sometimes even incredible stories can be a bit dull.
