I certainly enjoyed Joelle Jones' take on Catwoman, both from a writing and artistic standpoint, but there were a few plot elements/threads I was mixed on in regards to the resolution/development (or lack thereof, at times). (e-galley via NetGalley)

Can’t wait to read more

I wanted to read a catwoman arc written by a woman and this was satisfying and the art was great!

God I love Joëlle Jones's art so much. And while the story here isn't breathtaking, it's wonderfully noiry with an evil matriarch who runs a city by exerting control over her husband and sons.

After the events of the Wedding, I was hoping this would justify Selina’s decisions. But this story is unimaginative and messy. A lot of it didn’t work.

The art style wasn’t for me. The title “Copycats” was super contrived.

Poor Selina. You deserved much better as a launch for your solo series. Or better yet, can’t we just go back to the wedding and have that happen? Some of my favorite issues in Rebirth were Batman and Catwoman leading up to their wedding. Now they are both floundering.

As much as I enjoy some iterations of Catwoman, I have not followed her storyline particularly closely so I was curious to see how well she would hold up in the first entry in this new series. One of my coworkers wanted to borrow some of the single issue comic books that I subscribed to for my library, so I offered to read the first volume and let her know if I felt like she needed backstory before diving in. The impending wedding between Batman and Catwoman was huge news and this story takes place in the aftermath of that.

My immediate verdict is that no, this isn't easy to read without knowledge about Catwoman or her backstory. Despite the fact that this is a new series, you are thrown immediately into a new city, are introduced to a Selina Kyle with an entire continent's worth of baggage, and zero idea of how you got there. I read a lot of comics/graphic novels and I know how much they pull from other series or storylines (modern and historical), but this series was not immediately accessible to newcomers.

Overall, I enjoyed the art but the storyline was not one that I would recommend to new readers of Catwoman. Perhaps try the first entry in a different series of hers and you will have more luck with the storyline.

Enjoyable! I love Jones's art, and I liked this version of Catwoman. I haven't read any of the preceding Batman titles, but I kind of would like to go back and see their relationship and why it ended, though it wasn't really necessary for understanding this story, which had just as bananas a villain as you'd expect from a Batman book.
