My first Karin Slaughter book and I really enjoyed it even though the topics are tough! I also guessed the two big twists a mile away, but still enjoyed the journey of confirming my suspicions

Too many sentences start with she and the ending seemed like it skipped something abruptly.  In other books, I expect a jump to down the road in the future, it feels like the right place.  In this book, it didn't feel like the right place.  It felt like I missed something.

I loved this book despite the many trigger warnings it comes with. She has such a way with words that has you feeling like you're right there. You picture the scenes and even the smells. Quite a few you wish you didn't picture because of how disturbing they are. Sam, Charlie, Rusty, and Gamma will live rent free in my mind. I went through so many emotions during this book and cried a few times. This is definitely a rollercoaster with twists and turns I didn't see coming.

This was a great mystery! Very dark though. No one with a weak stomach should read. Not torture "corn", but very descriptive in the spots it needed it. Nothing was said for the sake of saying it. The heart of this story is a family, specifically sisters and their relationship. Great twists. Some obvious, some not. I would recommend this to anyone that likes a little dark mystery.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS.

<The book opens with sisters Samantha, 15, and Charlotte, 13, practicing a relay race in their yard. Their mom is inside. They are expecting their dad who is a defense attorney at any time. The girls go in to prepare for dinner and two masks men show up. Through the ordeal, the mom is murdered, Sam is shot in the head and buried alive, and we think Charlotte runs away to the neighbors house and gets help.
It then flashforwards 28 years. Sam is a parent lawyer in New York. Charlie is a defense attorney in their home town. Sam has lost her husband to cancer. Charlie is having a rough time in her marriage. The girls have not spoken in years. Charlie has to go to the middle school to get her phone from a one night stand when a school shooting occurs.
The rest of the book is trying to figure out what really happened in the school, how these people are intertwined with what happened to the girls years ago, and fixing the familial relationships.>

Overall a good story to entertain the reader, but…..
Slow, slow start…. I started and had to put it down for three months. Then read for a week and down again for two months. I’m not sure why I didn’t DNF this book but in the end I did enjoy it once it picked up. In two weeks time I went from having read 8% of the book to almost 85% of the book read.
The chapters were looonnnng… so long that at times it seemed like there would never be a break.
