What a wonderful gem!!! Such a quick read that made me cry from sadness and cry from laughter! Gary Janetti talks the readers through moments in his life in a way that makes you feel like you are experiencing it with him. A super cool kinda memoir.
Entertaining--light, poignant, humorous! Would enjoy a more in-depth book by Gary.
Honestly, I didn’t look into this book much before reading and it and saw the title and thought “wow this guy sounds relatable! I love canceling plans!” So I ended up reading this guys memoir even though I know nothing about him and I didn’t enjoy it that much. It jumped around in time and he never mentioned how any of the experiences he described influenced him or helped him get to where he is, so I found it very dissatisfying. I also did not laugh once despite reviews that described it as hilarious. Anyway, if you know this guy, maybe you’ll have a much different experience, but it wasn’t for me.
So, I wasn't sure what to expect out of this book, but he's not that much younger than I am, so a number of his essays were somewhat applicable to me. I really liked the poignant endings of some of his essays. very sweet.
Letdown as I love him on IG but this book was not it.
I love Gary and I am a huge fan of Will and Grace and Family Guy. He is so witty and charming. His sass and storytelling skills were prominent in this book that reads like a bunch of short story chapters, which i really enjoyed. I do wish there would have been a story or two about his time in LA and getting in to writing for tv shows. But overall, a nice quick read.
Kinda hated. One of my biggest beefs is that this memoir is told entirely in the present tense, i.e. "I am five years old, I am watching soap operas on the couch." This is a personal preference, I guess but I EFFING HATE THIS. It reads like a cheesy theater major's one-man-show. Hate Hate Hateeeeee. There is also A TON of repetition. I think he mentions that he did an acting workshop at Oxford in every other chapter INCLUDING THE ONE ABOUT DOING THE WORKSHOP AT OXFORD. If this is just a collection of essays he wrote for magazines and other publications, I get it but then some editing is definitely in order. I couldn't wait for it to be over and I am glad to be done with it.
I love Gary. Especially hearing him narrate it makes the experience of this 100x better. I don’t think you’d get the same experience at all just reading. 3.75. He’s got such a snobby dry sense of humor that I really resonate with. Is he an acquired taste? Sure, definitely. Do I love it? Yeah. Never take the first table that a restaurant host gives you is a bold tactic, but I get it. Who wants to sit in a shitty corner?
Significantly worse than the other one I read. Boring and kind of conceited writing.
I really, really wanted to like this book because Gary Janetti is so funny. That’s why it was really surprising that the book wasn’t funny or entertaining. The whole thing seemed so scatterbrained, no organization at all. Also where in the world was the editor because the book told some of the same stories or gave the same background stories for different situations multiple times which made it completely redundant. I didn’t really feel like there was much point to the book or that any specific message was being relayed - it was more like he was just talking about whatever came to his mind. I still love you, Gary!! I just didn’t like this book.
