This series is so smartly written. I love when children's books do no talk down to them.

What a delightful adventure! I loved the ending, even though I solved the mystery ahead of time. I think that most kids wouldn’t see the answer as early as an adult might. Honestly, I don’t know how Jennifer Chambliss Bertman gets her ideas. It’s fun to see the characters develop, too. Fans of Mr. Lemoncello’s Library will love all of the Book Scavenger books!

I don’t normally review kids books I read but this one was special! Read it out loud with my seven year old daughter who is really into mysteries. It did not disappoint. Great historical references, fun embedded ciphers, and unpredictable twists. I appreciated the author’s effort to weave in social commentary that resonated with young readers like challenging the image of a stereotypical gold miner. Other culturally diverse views and themes too. We looked forward to the next chapter each evening and sometimes stayed up late to read two or three :-)

Listened to and read aloud this one with my two boys. This is such a well written adventure series. My boys enjoy the adventure taking place alongside everyday life. Go to school, solve an unbreakable code, all in a days work! We thoroughly enjoyed the real history found about San Fransisco and used the opportunity to learn more about The City by the Bay. Now to make some It’s Its!

I think I enjoyed this sequel more than the first book. I say I think because it’s been awhile since I read the first one, so my memories are impacted by time, but I really think I liked this one more. I felt like it was more grounded in itself. While reading the first one, it felt like a copycat of the Lemoncello series, but this book really established itself differently and made it clear that it is a very different series. The biggest difference for me was that the plot and mystery of this book was based in reality and could, in theory, happen, whereas the Lemoncello series requires you to suspend disbelief much more often.
