In 1752, Italian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo painted the Allegory of the Planets and Continents for Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau, Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. The fresco contains archetypes of the 'four continents' America, Africa, Asia and Europe on its borders

Between 2012 and 2016, Canadian artist Kent Monkman painted four frescoes to update the archetypes in a particularly cheeky manner that is no less artistic in every merit. The cheekiness of the 'trickster' of indigenous mythology seeps through the paintings with this queering of renaissance painting and modern geopolitical stereotypes. It is a beautiful mixture of old and new, a breath of fresh air on a stale medium, a curious balance of absurd and stately.
