Ooooooof.
Hard-hitting, but I can only laugh cuz Allen Walker from D. Gray-man is planning to sue for copyright infringement on that arm!
Having been so jaded by "[character] did something amazing but it cut their lifespan" trope, was not expecting the host of other characters to be so heartbroken/desperate to keep the main character alive. This happens in a shonen battle manga, they go on with their lives expecting that life to end when it ends; but here, they are all treating it as an absolute death sentence and she'll be stone cold in a week!
Regardless, more fascinating aspects of the world pop up, including our first look at a coven of witches, more looks into the Alchemists' college, and the further machinations of the troublesome dude who's been instigating all this madness.

In the previous volume, Chise stopped a little dragon from going on a huge rampage, but the cost is that she is now suffering from a dragon's curse. According to Elias, there are no known ways to break the curse. Chise tries to console him by reminding him she has a shortened life as a Sleigh Beggy anyway, but Elias is consumed with trying to find a way to save her. The two are visited by Marielle, a witch with a very special coven who claim they can break Chise's curse, but there's a price: she'll have to join the coven. Chise visits the coven to figure out if they're telling the truth or not, and Elias worries he might mose her forever.

The introduction of witches in this volume add another layer of wonderful, mysterious magic to this already extremely rich world of fae and fantasy. The major drawback for me is, this is yet another volume with another punishment on Chise that costs her life or shortens it even more. There are so many things Chise does that shortens her life, so it's a wonder that she's still alive! Let's hope there can be some other consequences for the magic Chise performs in the future. This volume does leave on a cliffhanger where Chise has not fully decided what to do about the witches and her curse, so have Volume 9 ready to go for readers.

Again, a lot of filler and too many characters jumping around and nothing really is getting accomplished

Actual conflict arises

We have actual conflict that arises in this one, and it's mostly because these two are actual idiots and Elias thought he could be sly and it works most of the time but this time Chise said No, we aren't doing this!!! Because it turns out that when you try to sacrifice your wife's friend for a sacrificial ritual without her permission she isn't too happy with you.

And there is some with craft in it but that's like a minor plot point that I didn't really see the point of? More like to just introduce witches into the universe as a whole.

Really good volume. Lots of drama and action surrounding a singular puzzle. Expressive art, strong character moments.
