this was so cute and fun i loved it

Wish I Were Here was such a fun read. I do love a Grumpy/Sunshine trope and even better when the woman is the grump :) I loved Catherine and Luca. Very much A type personality meets golden retriever energy. Catherine has a good reason to be a little uptight with how she was raised by her dad.

I really enjoyed the concept of losing her identity. Not as magical as Melissa Wiesner's previous book, The Second Chance Year, but it had its own bit of magic.

It was a super cute read. The romance was sort of underlying and this was more a story of growth and discovery.

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Publishing for the ARC. This review is my own opinion.

I adored reading another speculative romcom by Melissa Wiesner! Magical realism is one of my absolute favorite subgenres in romance and she does it so well.

Wish I Were Here was a quick and quirky story about what would happen if your identity was suddenly “lost” and how it would impact not only your day to day life but also how you determine what is truly important in life and what defines you.

I loved the juxtaposition of the silliness between Luca and Catherine’s characters and all their shenanigans throughout the book and the underlying message about the importance of living life to its fullest.

Wish I Were Here is perfect for fans of Ashley Poston and Kate Robb, and anyone looking for a fun magical romp of a book!

Thanks to Forever/Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars, rounded up

I really struggled with the beginning of this one. It took entirely too long to get to the inciting incident in my opinion. It was relatively predictable and some of the characters could've used a bit more development as well.

But in the end, I did enjoy it as a sweet story about found family, grief, and identity.

“Though I saw him yesterday, he still greets me like it’s been years. I guess it’s always been this way, like seeing me is the best part of his day.”

emotional funny lighthearted mysterious sad fast-paced

Catherine is an uptight math professor who finds her new position in jeopardy when she can’t prove her identity. Overnight all of her documents have disappeared and her dad is no help at all. In fact, the only help she has is from her carefree, attractive doorman Luca. The two work together to resolve Catherine’s problem and connect despite having little in common, but can they make it last?

I have loved Melissa Wiesner’s previous work, and this book might be her very best! I have found that magical realism really adds something special to a rom com, and I loved that about this one. The little extra connections in the story take it to the next level and make it such a heartwarming read. Luca is charming and thoughtful, and truly one of those selfless people who you’d want to be around. Catherine isn’t necessarily likable, but you see her soften and develop as a character once she realizes what she is missing in her life. If you enjoy Ashley Poston and Katherine Center books, you’ll love this one!

Thank you so much to Melissa for my gifted advance reader copy and Forever publishing for the digital copy.
