At close to 800 pages, this book seems daunting, but it reads pretty quickly. I will not say easily -- in this family saga, there are many events of sexual violence and pure brutality. It also has a lot of characters to keep track of, and I have to admit, there were times I just let that ride. But Jeffers is a skillful writer and I always looked forward to picking up the book at the end of the day to see what would happen next.
