A solid series with enjoyable highs and frustrating lows.

This is a review that covers the story from vol.1 up to vol.9

The Otherworld Arc was a satisfying conclusion and just as satisfying a stopping point. Aneko’s writing in Shield Hero is a bit unusual, there are times when the writing becomes difficult to stomach, that it becomes a chore to read. But just as much, I will be bored for one hundred pages then suddenly I will become enthralled and be unable to put down the story.

Perhaps, it’s best to call Aneko inconsistent.

I was satisfied by the ending point in this volume, I really loved L’arc, Glass and Therese and even Kizuna. They made for a great foil/compliment to Naofumi’s own personality and his party as well. I think Rishia’s potential is somewhat wasted having her take so long to play a deciding role is causing some fatigue and while Naofumi has grown a lot it also feels like he’s regressing partially.

All things considered; Shield Hero’s world is fascinating but its characters are the real shining star. While the story is at times bogged down by its own scope and pacing I don’t regret reading the novels up to this point at all!

I’ll be saving the rest of the story for a later time but if you enjoy isekai and can stomach the usual anime tropes and writing you’ll enjoy yourself.
