I was ten when the Maximum Carnage story arc began. It was also first story arc I was ever introduced in the world of graphic novels - ahem! comic books. (The second taking place a few years after with the Age of Apocalypse.)

Looking at it now, I can remember what I loved about the arc. However, it's not the same feeling I got when I was ten - go figure. It seems that the story gets too wordy - for instance, Spider-Man's internal monologue gives us the information rather than letting us come up with it alone. And the moral - for lack of the better word - is what you find in a lot of the old story arcs - despite all that surrounds us, there is still good in the world and it's worth fighting for (whoa! talk about Lord of the Rings). All in all, the book is still a fun read.

Dang! What a knock-down-drag-out this one was! Spidey is in over his head fighting Venom, but what happens when a psychopath inherits the symbiote? Carnage is impossible to beat and because of that, Spider-man has to make some alliances, some of them the most unlikely, but under the circumstance, necessary. I remember playing this game back in the 90's and now I think it warrants a revisit. I am so glad to be reading the symbiote comic arcs, they are the best!

I'm not sure there is a better representation of comics in the 90's than this mixed bag of over the top violence and extravagance. It's a massive crossover that brings in heroes and villains throughout the Marvel universe and is pretty violent for a Spider-Man event. It's Carnage's 2nd appearance and this time they go all out with his insanity and thirst for killing. Despite being a bit too long, unnecessarily violent at times, and clearly made as a cash grab.....I do think there is more good than bad, and it spawned one of my favorite Sega games. 3.5/4

Another one I've read as part of going through a list of the greatest Spider-Man stories... A tale of Spider-Man (and a few recruited guests) battling everyone's favorite symbiotic sickos: Venom and Carnage.

I don't know if it's the fact that I'm reading these supposed "classics" alongside Ultimate Spider-Man (which I'm really liking) or if it's just that they don't age well, but at times, this was just a burden to read. It's like a long fight scene with little depth.

Fun at times, but this won't go on my list of Spider-Man classics.
