This is the first time I’ve heard of the author and upon finishing the book I immediately followed him on Twitter… a compliment of the highest order in the digital age.
John is clearly highly knowledgeable in the field of Putins Russia and shares some incredible insights to the inner workings of the Kremlin, the FSB and Vladimir Putin himself.
Stories such as the Chechenya wars, Moscow apartment bombings and Skripal poisonings underpin the absolute extremes that Putin is willing to go to to push his agenda. The existence and tolerance of such an extreme fascist regime in the 21st century is truly astonishing and first hand proof that the world hasn’t moved on too far from Stalins Russia or Hitlers Nazi Germany.
Vladimir Putin does whatever he wants and he gets away with it. Mercilessly bombing and murdering innocent civilians, poisoning political opponents and UK intelligence officers (in the UK!) and bombing his own citizens to win an election.
The wests appeasement of Putins murderous regime and recurring war crimes for fear of reprisal is a complete tragedy. When the repercussions almost certainly include nuclear warfare threatening the lives of entire nations it is hard to criticise Western leaders. But where is the line drawn?
Anyway… This is a fascinating and relatively quick read if you’re intrigued to learn more about Putin, his history and also to read some first hand accounts from the front lines in Ukraine. I would definitely recommend!
