Laurie is probably a really intelligent boy. I mean, he's five years old and he's already manipulating his parents into thinking that all the bad stuff he was doing in school was someone else named Charles! I fear for what he's going to be when he grows up...

I work in a school and this week was reading week. Each tutor group was given a story to read to their students and this was the one we were given.

At first I was disappointed that this was the one we were given. The title 'Charles,' induced no excitement in me at all. It sounded dull and unimaginative. I expected it to be about an old person who is a bit judgemental and for the whole book to have a pessimistic tone. Well don't judge a book by its title ay!

This book is actually the opposite of that. Its very much about imagination and specifically the imagination of children. It was quite humorous and keeps you intrigued the whole time.

It's very short but it does everything it needs too in so few pages.

I have no doubt most people can relate to this if you look back at your own childhood at some tales that you may have told. I remember telling my mum age 5, that I fell asleep in class. I didn't. I also told her that we were only allowed to wear white socks in primary school. We weren't. I never said theses things to be bad, or clever, it was simply childhood imagination and stimulation. That's what this story is all about.

It's kept my interest all week for sure.

"Charles" is a classic story. The plot is carried very well through the narrative of the mother and is quite comical.

Weirdly, I remember this as being much more sinister than it is (I just reread it). I didn't even know it was by Shirley Jackson when I thought that, I don't think! I still don't really know what to make of it, especially as I think it might be a true story about her own son?
