I’m genuinely a little bit speechless. It was a very haunting and beautiful read. Safe to say I never even considered it ending the way it did. Very heart wrenching and really reaffirms my love of dark academia. Can’t wait for M. L. Rio’s next book.

This book was amazing, definitely in my favourite ones. At first I struggled with believing and reading the Shakespeare, but now I think that’s it’s good that I didn’t understand everything, that somethings were left for them. I knew from the very beginning about James and Oliver, even about who killed Richard. I need a sequel, I was literally on the verge of tears near the end. It was so well written, like a safe medium between a classic and an easy read.
Loved Pip, raging about the ending two years later

More of a 3.5

The plot and characters were amazing...but the writing style made me struggle to read this. I don't know what it was but...it wasn't my thing.

But oh this was a good book and made me sob

"How could we explain that standing on a stage and speaking someone else's words as if they are your own is less an act of bravery than a desperate lunge at mutual understanding? An attempt to forge that tenuous link between speaker and listener and communicate something, anything, of substance."

This book... has so much of my heart wrapped up in it. I was always going to love it but I think I love it a little bit more than I expected because of how much of myself is in here. It feels like this book was written for me.

The characters feel so real to me and their relationships with each other are just so special. They care about each other so deeply that you feel everything that happens to each of them as if they're your friends, too. The friendships in here are just wonderful. They don't need to say that they love each other for you to know that they absolutely, wholeheartedly do, for better or for worse - and, often, tragically, for worse.

The thread of Shakespeare (which is more like a rope, really. a very thick rope) running throughout is done so well and I loved it. The way the plays they put on mirror what's happening to the characters is brilliant and, yes, the Shakespearean dialogue is pretentious, but I like a bit of pretentiousness every now and again. We can have some intellectual indulgence. As a treat.

The writing is beautiful and the story is, as well - in a very tragic way. It has so much heart to it, which I really didn't expect. It is filled with life.

I can see why this book may be polarising but I got to experience it whilst studying Shakespeare at drama school and couldn't have been more immersed. This book is just wonderful and these characters are so special to me. I miss them already.
