another one i’d have to reread to give a cohesive review on but well… this story is so absolutely crazyyy and i am so grateful to have been influenced to read it. i want to annotate it since i have my own copy but for now it lives on as a tragically insane story in my brain… i don’t know how to articulate how complex this main ensemble is and how we truly get to see their mental/sociological conflicts develop as time goes on…

we see such a lonely and abused child being raised to think that she is lesser, or not even cared for at all, finding that she is an outsider looking in. and so she finds solace in that, and when she finds that her cousin feels the same way, she finds connection with him. i think that lack of ability to express her capacity for compassion made it hard for her to comprehend how may be… appropriate to do so in many cases. which is something that is reoccuring; that when everything you do is wrong, you are entirely unaware of what may be socially acceptable. we see our main character in it for the entirety of the story, the cousin is reluctant to fall back into it after years of normalcy in his adulthood, and the husband is in it as long as we know him due to his own complex relationship with his family.

i do think that this story is a reflection of japanese culture in a way that i don’t entirely understand, but it definitely gave me a little more context into how victims of misogyny in japan may perceive & internalize these experiences. obviously this story is a very extreme case and not close to general reality, but it did cause me to ponder where sayaka may have found inspiration!! amazing amazing book

This book was a really bizarre and biting commentary about fitting into mainstream society. It's excellently translated from Japanese. If you are sensitive to triggers, this might not be for you. The story has the kind of dark, warped humor that makes people look at me funny because I love it.

I did not read the content warnings, so found it pretty shocking and hard to get through some sections. It is from the perspective of someone who has dissociated due to trauma, who finds humans and bodies strange and inexplicable. It reminds me a bit of the 2023 movie Poor Things.
