Read the content warnings! The cover and quote on the front make this out to be lighthearted, but it gets dark fast. By the end you’ll be sitting in silence thinking about what you’ve just read.

This is a horror book on trauma and you can’t convince me otherwise.

TLDR: Very good book, major trigger warnings.

Context: I thought I’d read a short novel after finally finishing Dahlgren. The cover is cute. The blurb is interesting, a nice coming of age story of a Japanese woman. Nice and light.

I was not ready for chapter 2 (the book is short, 6 chapters). Chapter 6 though was downright mind crushing.

Ms Murata is a very good writer. I have read books where children are abused before. Never have I read a book where the author describes the disassociation and alienation that can be caused by that abuse so truly. She takes you to the edge, then a little more. You really can’t leave until she is done with you.

I will be thinking about chapter 6 for a long time. End of life hallucination or reality?

I will read more of Ms Murata’s fiction, just not right after finishing something akin to Dahlgren, if I can help it, and with more attention to trigger warnings.

ALMOST EVERY TRIGGER WARNING NEEDS TO BE APPLIED TO THIS BOOK
I thought this book was going to be an easy 5 stars, but the last part changed that...
The pacing, the story, the protagonist's traumatic, disturbed childhood and later approach to her wellbeing, are ingredients to make a stunner of a page-turner for me!
However, the pacing slows down in Chapter 5 (whilst the final chapter absolutely makes up for it) and that's the only reason it can't make the full five stars. Weird to say considering the unpredictability of this book, but a few of the plot lines were predictable too which lowered the rating a little more. But, a strong 4.5 stars, and desperately want to more books by Murata!

I don't even know what to say. That was horrifying but so beautifully written I couldn't look away.

The guy behind the register at the bookstore I bought this from tried to warn me.
