In the Clear

Kathryn Nolan

4.35 AVERAGE

With the release of "In the Clear" Kathryn Nolan has reunited everyone's favorite private detectives for a sexy, smart, superb conclusion to the Codex series.

"In the Clear" features the owner of Codex, Abe Royal, a calm, unflappable, workaholic who meets his match in the equally brilliant and totally badass private detective competition, Sloane Argento.

The marvelous new characters of Uncles Humphrey and Reggie were so enjoyable and charming. I would love to know them (as well as the entire Codex staff) in real life!

Full of "clever wit and dark desires", Sloan and Abe's adventure is an enthralling and smashing novel, a brilliant ending for the suspenseful and delightful Codex cast!

In the Clear is the final installment of the Codex series and I'm sad it's over. This series is so smart and so sexy, I don't want it to end but I sure did enjoy the ride.

Abe Royal is the strong and stoic leader of the Codex team, a group of private detectives who hunt and return stolen books, papers, and other various literary gems.

I was excited to meet the lady who would bring Abe Royal's defenses down and boy Sloane did not disappoint. What a strong, independent, sexy badass! The push and pull between the two is electric. Both are used to being on their own with strong walls built around their hearts. As they work together to bring down a common nemesis, those walls start to fall and the result is sexy as hell.

The case itself is intriguing and glamorous and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to discover how this mystery would be resolved.

Oh, Abe. You were worth the wait.

In the Clear is a fantastic finale to a fantastic series. From the first chapter of Behind the Veil to the epilogue of In the Clear, I was all in.

In the Clear focuses on Abe Royal, the owner of Codex and the leader of the team. He takes his position very seriously, always looking out for his investigators before himself. Abe is serious, driven, singular in focus and in his attire (suits for all occasions). Unable to leave work behind, his vacation to London actually is his quest to find Bernard Allerton, the great villain of the series. In his quest to finally bring Bernard to justice, Abe encounters Sloane Argento, the younger, resourceful, and driven private investigator also on the hunt for Bernard. They are immediately entranced with, obsessed with, in lust with, and unable to stay away from each other . As the story progresses, we watch as they deal with their immediate draw to one another, how they feel for each other, and how they attempt to deal with their intense feelings. I sometimes have problems with older men, younger women stories due to an imbalance in power. Have no doubt, Sloane is as powerful, as smart and as talented as Abe. She knows it and he knows it.

Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle play a huge part in the story through a Sherlock Society in which Bernard plays a large role, and the letters of Conan Doyle as the object of the villain's desire. I thought the book itself could be an homage to Holmes and Conan Doyle in a small way. For example, it has its own Moriarity in Allerton as the criminal mastermind directing others to commit his crimes while he remained hidden. Other characters resembling those in Doyle's mysteries also abound, but to describe them further would spoil some of the fun of the mystery.

I cannot finish this review without commenting that Kathryn Nolan writes some of the sexiest, hottest, most enthralling first kisses I have read. Abe and Sloane were on fire while sitting next to the fire. My goodness.

I will miss Codex but I am thankful that their journey ended satisfyingly and lovingly in this gem of a book.
