For the purposes of explaining trauma, the effect it has on survivors, and the process of recovery afterwards, the author references many different potentially triggering real life situations experienced by patients including the Nazi Holocaust, intimate partner violence, incest, the Vietnam War, and confinement of political prisoners. These situations are presented both realistically and empathetically - there is no exaggeration or beating around the bush, as to do either would be doing survivors a disservice. Readers should be aware of this content before picking up this book.zombiezami's review against another edition

A really challenging but informative read. It's less self help book and more an examination of trauma and how it can present through symptoms, and how it can be eased and helped with psychotherapy. It is written from a feminist perspective and includes writing on the influence of misogyny in viewing abusive situations.
Moderate: Child abuse, Suicide, Physical abuse, Pedophilia, Misogyny, Mental illness, Incest, Emotional abuse, and Domestic abuse
This book is about real world trauma, it doesn't go into explicit extended detail but it is a challenging read.
