Wow, what a book! A tome, at 617 pages, but it was so gripping that I enjoyed every second. Reading this with the audiobook and the physical book is a MUST. The book has incredible illustrations, and the audiobook narrator is one of the best I’ve ever listened to. They truly enhanced the story. Plain Bad Heroines is a story within a story within a story within a story, and its layers were so fun to peel back and discover. It’s a love story to cult horror movies and sapphic women, and the writing was absolutely stunning. A perfect book club read!

4 stars for being entertaining and unique, 3 stars for plot. I liked the back and forth between the present day and the past, but I wish they had been more explicitly interwoven - if there were parallels between them, they were so subtle as to be devoid of much meaning. I liked the snarky narrator and use of footnotes, however it did get a bit much and made the story drag. I liked how much backstory we got on each character, especially the modern girls, but it never ended up being very relevant. I liked the spooky haunted boarding school, but I never fully understood the reason for the haunting (my eternal question with horror - why exactly does the hotel want to kill everyone?). Despite the many things I didn't like, I did really enjoy reading this and was eager to pick it up each time. There were chapters where I felt strong emotions and was giddy to see what happened. So I do recommend this book as an entertaining read. However, in terms of plot and overall artistry, it fell short and I was left feeling very unsatisfied.
