I had an absolute blast reading this. There were several problematic things I didn’t remember (such as how Rose is 17 when her and Dmitri get together for the first time), but there were some good messages mixed in too, and honestly, I just had fun. I can’t ask for anything more from a 2007 vampire novel

This rating is reflective of how much I enjoyed this book when I originally read it, however I recognize a lot of the issues this book has now, and probably wouldn't rate it as highly anymore, despite really enjoying all rereads.

I absolutely loved my time with this book. It took me straight back to my high school days of binge-reading YA vampire books and becoming completely obsessed.

I sped through this one in one night as it is so fast-paced and exciting (and, of course, it's a YA vampire book and my inner teen still eats that stuff up). I adore Rose a main character and the sexual tension between her and Dimitri is everything.

I also think, for a typical YA vampire book, this one handles issues surrounding mental health really well, particularly in its discussion of self-harm.

I can't wait to binge-read the rest of the series.

This is probably the worst book I’ve ever read. From slut shaming to pedophilia this book has it all. The characters are mostly unlikable and one-dimensional and the dialogue is cringe-y at best. The main character/narrator is funny, at least, so it gets a portion of a point for that. I read the entire thing waiting for the book to start making sense and it never did, I do not recommend this book at all.

2022

Early on I thought I would revise my original rating more, but having finished it... Not so much. It's very 2007, from the mutual crush on a teacher (though not followed through on) to the extremely awkward handling of self harm and depression, from the Not Like Other Girls to the style and structure of the plot itself.

It's not an unpleasant read but it needs the "aged like bread" warning before you head in. Some of it still looks fine but there's some faintly blue fuzz on one corner of the loaf.

Also, I'm endlessly amused by "I'll read more!" and then proceeding to read exactly 0 further pages in 6 years. This time maybe!

The pacing is a little bit off for me, but this book kept me reading to the end and I'll probably read more of the series which is more than I can say for some books!
