Starting to reread a bunch of series I read in highschool. For what it is- a highschool vampire series, the first book is pretty good. I don't really get why they're in highschool if all the things happening seem a bit more college age (drinking, sex, dorms etc) but I guess if they're in highschool then the mc attraction to her teacher is more "forbidden."
the back cover is sort of a fake out, the strigoi don't even show up or even pose much of a threat (other than "one day you'll have to fight them") until the very last chapter
. It's mostly teen drama, but if that's what you're looking for, then this one's pretty good

I personally may be biased in my rating, from nostalgia and all, but I personally think this is a great book, and maybe one of the best ones in the series (don't quote me on this it will probably change later). I think it sets up the story, the world, the characters, and the conflict perfectly and then follows through amazingly. Even knowing what happens before hand, I was still on the edge of my seat. I get there are some problematic parts, and if that bothers you, I get it. This book isn't for everyone. But it doesn't bother me. I'm so excited to read the rest of the series and finally finish it! LOOK AT THE CONTENT WARNINGS. It spoils the book a little but it's kinda necessary. You don't want to be surprised.

Early on I thought I would revise my original rating more, but having finished it... Not so much. It's very 2007, from the mutual crush on a teacher (though not followed through on) to the extremely awkward handling of self harm and depression, from the Not Like Other Girls to the style and structure of the plot itself.

It's not an unpleasant read but it needs the "aged like bread" warning before you head in. Some of it still looks fine but there's some faintly blue fuzz on one corner of the loaf.

Also, I'm endlessly amused by "I'll read more!" and then proceeding to read exactly 0 further pages in 6 years. This time maybe!

The pacing is a little bit off for me, but this book kept me reading to the end and I'll probably read more of the series which is more than I can say for some books!
