This was okay. You're kind of dropped in the middle of everything, so it's not exactly "beginner" friendly. The tension between Tommy and the team has been the most interesting part so far. The art is okay - much better when it comes to the Ranger form and the actions sequences than the civilian side of things.
Ever since I saw the gorgeous preview art for their issue zero before anything even came out, I knew I won't be able to stop myself from reading this. I was just hoping it won't be too silly.
And then came NYCC a year later, and all of vol. 1 was already out, and I flipped through the pags and it was really pretty.
Then the guy ate the BOOM Studios booth told me this starts right after Rita loses her hold on Tommy and he struggles with PTSD and whatnot. Sounded promising already. Add to that the fact that it was loyal to canon but placed in nowadays, I was sold, and so I bought it (hardy har.)
I happy to say it was everything I hoped it would be. All the old favs are here, placed at Angel Grove, CA (which looks suspiciously like NYC with its very recognizable bridges.)
Not everything is swell from the get go. We're used to somewhat fluffed superheros, but here we get complex people with complex dynamics, and real, reasonable insecurities.
We even get some science and overall the depth we never got in a kid show like the original. So this is the deeper modern day version we were hoping for without it being a whole new relaunch or re-imagining of the characters.
If you loved/miss the original show I totally recommend this.

The same power rangers you loved as a kid only with a more adult feel. Starting just as Tommy breaks free of Rita’s spell and joins the rangers but there’s tension should they trust him? Does Tommy even trust himself? Highly Recommend to new and old fans.
