I had another book prepped to read, but saw this in the store and immediately bought it. Tess Gerritsen is my favourite author. When she's not accusing every movie set at the international space station of plagiarising her book "Gravity", she writes really nifty thrillers!

We have Jane and Maura investigating the death of a young woman, who has been found with her eyes removed, and placed in her hand. Gruesome! Other murders occur, a link is found to a previous crime, as well as a court case from 20 years previously. Seeming to link all of this is Holly, who we presume knows the secrets mentioned in the title!

Another winner from Tess, which I read in one go. The plot is pacy and suspenseful. The characters of Jane and Maura seemed to have absorbed some of the traits from their TV show counterpart, which clashes somewhat with their characterisations in the books from before the TV show, but it gives them that little extra bit of humanity, so I didn't mind. What I did mind were the forays into the Rizzoli family dramas. I was never really that interested. Never have been, to be honest. It was fine in the TV show, because there were several episodes a season and had the time to explore it. But we only get a Rizzoli & Isles book every couple of years, so I prefer the focus to be on the plot!

Otherwise, it was great to delve into a thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish.

This is the first Rizzoli and Isles book I actually didn't like and I'm so sad about it. It just felt....off. Not her usual absorbing read. The mystery was good enough but part of what makes this series so good for me is all the personal drama and developments that happen for Jane and Maura. This book was just the same family drama for Jane and the same Daniel drama for Maura. No movement forward whatsoever there. Gerritsen also usually has some larger theme at work with the mystery exploring the meaning of evil and other big ideas and that was a bit flimsy in this as well. She did cover the complexity of unreliable witness testimony and false memories, but could have done a lot more with it. And finally, where was Anthony Sansone!!!???? This is a case he would have absolutely been on top of because of the religious symbolism. I dunno. It was just a swing and a miss. Lots of potential but not on par with the rest of her books.

Fantastic as always. Love her style of writing. Love how I always get lost in the characters and the plots. I honestly don’t know how she could get more creative with her stories. It is truly a masterpiece.

Definitiv kein thriller! Spannend erst so die letzten 70 Seiten. Aber kein Thriller Material. Ganz normaler krimi. Dennoch habe ich einfach immer weitergelesen. Lag vlt daran, dass die Kapitel alle recht kurz waren.
