I thought this book was just okay. It takes place when Bruce Wayne was a teenager. It tells a bit of the back story of how his parents die. I thought the first 3/4 of the book was pretty slow. It picked up the last 1/4 of the book. There is a bit of romance in the story but I found it a bit off putting.
It is the 2nd book of the DC Icons serie. I wish I could say that I loved this book, but it was kind meh. At the beginning I couldn‘t get into the story, I don‘t know why, it just didn‘t pick me up.

Marie Lu, bilip tanıdığımız Batman'e ne kadar sağdık kalsa da hikayesine yeni karakterler eklemiş ve çizgi romanlardan tanıdığımız bazı karakterlere yeni bir yorum getirmiş. Mesela kitapta hepimizin Two Face olarak bildiği Harvey Dent var ve kendisi Bruce'un en yakın arkadaşlarından biri. Buna ilk başta çok şaşırsam ve "Bu kadın ne yapıyor?" triplerine girsem de sondadan hikayede pek bir olayı olmayınca üstüne varmadım. Alfred, Lucius Fox ve Gordon gibi karakterler de bence kitapta iyi yansıtılmıştı.
Kitaptaki yeni karakterlerimizden biri Madeleine Wallace adındaki bir Gecegezen. Şimdi bildiğiniz gibi, gıcık olmalara doyamadığım SJM, sevmelere doyamadığım Selina Kyle'ın yani Catwoman'ın kitabını yazıyor. Bu nedenle canım Selina bu kitapta yok. Onun yerine yazar Madeleine'i getirmiş ve bu karakterle de küçük bir Selina Kyle kopyası yaratmış. Bunu karakteri görür görmez anlıyorsunuz. Madeleine'e biraz cilve ve bir de kedi kostümü eklersek elde edeceğimiz sonuç Selina Kyle'dan başkası olamaz. Karakteri sevdim mi? Evet. Daha iyi yazılabilir mitdi? Evet. SJM'den nefret ediyor muyum? Kesinlike evet.

Yani tamam, kendisi için "Gelmiş geçmiş en iyi çevirmen. Onun kadar iyi çeviren kimse yok." havasına asla girmedim ama bu kitabın çevirisi neydi öyle ya... Sinir katsayılarımı arttırdı resmen. Yani kitabı çevirirken ne yaşamış bilmiyorum ama yazarın cümlelerini keyfine göre devrik yapacak kadar kaybetmişiz kadını. Çeviri beni mahvetti ya. Uzun zamandır bu kadar kötü bir çeviri okumamıştım. Kitabı sürekli yarım bırakmak isteme sebeplerimden biri kesinlikle ve kesinlikle çeviriydi.

When I heard of this series I was HYPE! Especially since Wonder Woman was the first one! I was a bit worried about this one tho because I haven't had much luck with Lu's writing. (Yes, I'm the black sheep...) But after reading this, I realize I didn't have anything to worry about.
Bruce Wayne has just turned eighteen and inherited his parent's millions and their technology company. But after a joyride, he lands in the middle of trouble with the police and having to do community service at Arkham Asylum. There he meets Madeleine, a girl who could either be really good for him or really bad; he hasn't decided yet.
I already knew I would like this a little because of Batman. I've been a long time fan of his forever and it was so cool to see him in this type of story. I think what I loved most about it wasn't an origin story since Batman doesn't really have powers lolol It was just a story of what Bruce Wayne was like before he had the title of Batman. And though that seems miniscule, it made a huge difference.
I also really liked the way the little nuggets of information in there. Batman was rich so he was definitely privileged in many different ways and I LOVED the fact that Lu wasn't afraid to say mention all those ways. It made a difference to this African American reader who doesn’t know much about the sort of privilege that Batman (or anyone else for that matter) has.
The only thing I didn’t really care for was some of the middle part. At some point the middle seemed a bit repetitive, but in the end I knew it was for a reason. It all added up in the end it all added up and it was obvious that it was needed in some way.
This was a bit of a surprise for me, but it reads like some of my favorite tv shows. I know what part of it that I liked so much. I just wasn’t expecting it.

I think this book could have been more drawn out and detailed than it was. I don't know much about Batman's origins and this story did not make much sense with the batman stories I'm familiar with. I did not like the romance in this, like it was way too insta-love. I thought it was a quick and fun read though, mostly a filler book.

I love Batman and I was neutral on Legends but I love Leigh Bardugo and she loves Marie Lu so I was skeptical that this book would be a let down due to all of the hype.
I read Wonder Woman, and ngl, was let down, but I was impressed with Batman.
I’m not a big fan of the romantic connection being the driving factor but I love and relate to Bruce’s passion for justice. I also love how Madeleine was such a grey character. She was such a good character... like, I was seeing things from an omniscient POV and I knew more than Bruce did, but she still tricked me.
The first plot twist I should’ve, but didn’t, see coming. The second I did.
Bruce felt less like Batman and more like a YA teen heartthrob, but the more I thought about it... sooo Batman.

The plot was fine, good even, but the characters were painfully bad, Bruce especially. He was always saying he wanted to "understand" or "help" police, which was total bullsh*t because he only ever wanted to do things alone. Like if you want to be a badass superhero or get off on detective work/hero work, it's cool, just don't disguise it as wanting to understand/help the cops. Like in the first scene, he has a superfast car and the police cars aren't fast enough to catch a bad guy. How about GIVING THE POLICE YOUR CAR? Also, there is nothing to establish why he is friends with his friends except a cheap line about how they can "just tell" how the others are feeling, when multiple scenes show he either can't tell what the others are feeling, or he's just ignoring them and doing whatever he wants. Which again, is fine, but at least be honest about it and stop pretending like you really care about/understand these friends. Also the excess of technology porn wasn't my jam, but that's not an inherent problem.

It's funny how the similar, well-written but light tone - which I think would be great for younger YA readers - in both the books in so far makes it difficult to notice they were actually written by separate authors.
And as always, Marie Lu does love her techy sci-fi.
