*I read this in January 2018 and reviewed it then. I read it as a hardcover, and as always, this is my honest opinion.

Out of all the DC heroes being covered in this series, Batman is my favorite. Not being much of a DC fan myself, I’ve had a blast reading these.

This book was fast paced and easy to read. I was surprised it was only 250 pages and it flew by as I read. Marie Lu’s writing is amazing as always, and I’m glad I read.

The premise was interesting, and I enjoyed reading the story and how it developed. Admittedly, it caught me by surprise a couple of times, and other times it didn’t.

This is a perfectly adequate story, by all means, and an enjoyable one, at that. It’s just…it’s not really a superhero story.

It tries to be an origin story, in the same vein as Wonder Woman: Warbringer, but it’s not an origin story, because we don’t ever truly see Batman. It’s more like a prequel, a few steps before the actual story begins.

I know Bruce doesn’t become Batman in his teens, and while I enjoyed seeing hints of the future, I was a little saddened that we didn’t get to see Batman, we just saw Bruce. I was looking forward to Batman.

Overall, this is an enjoyable book, and the tension between Bruce and Madeleine was awesome, but I’m left wanting more. The name, “Batman” was never even mentioned.

Full of characters you can't understand. Just like life. I especially liked Diane, Batman's friend. He gets to have friends in this story!

3.5/5 stars. I enjoyed the story but it was a tad bit underwhelming. It was well written becuase I'm not sure Marie Lu could write a bad book, but I think I had high expectations that it just didn't meet.

NOTE: I was sent this book from Penguin Teen Australia in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own and review on channel to come.

Okay, it's safe to say that this was much better than Wonder Woman: Warbringer in my opinion. As someone who knows of Batman because he's such a major superhero in pop culture, but hasn't read his comics, this was a good introduction to his character.

This book follows a young Bruce Wayne, and that alone I appreciate. The focus was on a younger version of him and not him being a sideline to a younger character and that made this book even more effective.

It was also a pretty fast-paced, quick read.

This book has definitely motivated me to continue with the DC Icons series.
This book was a gem!

Started with a bit of race and gender shaming, but not as obnoxious as some I’ve read.

Story was a bit bland for a good part of the book, but I think it did a good job at following normal Batman story frameworks. I wasn’t surprised by the twists at the end. I was almost expecting them to come.

I had never really noticed it before, but Bruce really does have a thing for bad girls.

When I started this book it didn't really hold my attention. There wasn't much going on, to be fair. I was worried for a good 80 pages that I wasn't going to like the book at all. About halfway the story started to really pick up pace, and then after this point it was quite gripping. Marie Lu writes action scenes really well, so that was a huge positive. I also thought that the setting of Gotham was one of the best parts of this book. It is possible that being a fan of The Dark Knight trilogy and constantly playing Lego Batman when I was younger helped me to visualise things better, but nevertheless the setting was great. I actually ended up enjoying this book more than Wonder Woman: Warbringer, which surprised me. Whereas I feel that Wonder Woman is a book that becomes weaker as it goes along, Batman: Nightwalker was the opposite. It's not entirely realistic and I would have liked a few more references to Batman characters, but overall it was an enjoyable read.

This book delivers on the Batman vibes; an atmospheric Gotham City, cool gadgets and even Alfred. My problem with this book was its plot. I was underwhelmed with the storyline.
